Tetris Championship Edition (ZX Spectrum)
A downloadable game
Why it's called Tetris Championship Edition? This version supposed to be played in competitions similar to Classic Tetris World Championship, when two players compete each other for higher score. One of unimplemented features - online remote game by Internet with the same pieces.
But you can still use it's single player features perfectly.
To make things even funnier there's a challenge related to the game. I put a secret message in one of the puzzles. Just like in good old times. You may call it Easter Egg. The one who find, decode and write correct answer here will be dubbed as "The Greatest Tetris CE Puzzle Solver" (no money prizes, sorry). It's not easy, but I'm sure it's possible. No cheating :)
Despite it's a version 1.0, there are some bugs lurking in game still. I'm really sorry for that.
I just realized that puzzle mode can be quite confusing for new players. To solve a puzzle you need to fulfill your quota. It's displayed in the center of the screen. For example if it says 2 LINES 02, 3 LINES 01, you have to make double lines twice and triple lines once (exceeding lines count as well). If there's a timer you have to fulfill quota before the timer reaches zero. If there's a timer and NO quota - you just have to survive until timer reach zero. If you see DESTROY ALL BRICKS message please look for red-white blocks in puzzle - you have to get rid of them too.
If it's still hard for you, try playing original Tetris 2 levels (PUZZLE A-TYPE mode).
Here's a list of changes:
* New Korobeiniki AY tune by me
* 50 FPS modes - it was like 25 FPS before (switching between players each frame)
* Kempston joystick support
* you can hold left or right key and piece will move continuously in that direction (you had to press these keys many times before);
* soft drop implemented;
* you can now rotate pieces to the right too (previously it was only to the left);
* accordingly, Redefine Keys screen has been changed;
* the randomizer has been greatly improved, now the same frequency of all pieces is guaranteed;
* scoring system has been changed: now it’s much more profitable to clean several lines at once, especialy 4;
* the level increases when a certain amount of lines is cleared (previously it did not change at all);
* the number of levels in the classic mode has been increased: earlier, only levels 1-8 were available, now it's 0-9 by default and 10-19 with DROP key pressed;
* theoretically the number of levels is not limited;
* two tracks by František Fuka was replaced by another tracks by the same author;
* in Tetris 2 mode all levels have been redone (now there are 50 of them, but there will be more), and this mode was named Puzzle. You can choose original Tetris 2 levels from the menu too;
* your pieces have texture now, puzzles don't;
* cheat mode for Puzzle was added, you can choose pieces textures here too;
* Normal Tetris mode was renamed to Classic;
* now you can listen to music along with 48k effects or choose AY effects without music (you had limited choices: beeper effects _OR_ AY music in original version);
* colors of the pieces have been changed according to modern Tetris Guidelines (although orange was replaced with white, because there is no orange on the ZX Spectrum. It should be possible with ULA+);
* Puzzle mode now has harder levels limited by a timer (in the original, there was simply a transition to a new level if time was out).
many more additions that I forgot.
Original game called Tetris2 and it was released in 1990 by Fuxoft (František Fuka and friends). Changes from Tetris 4 by Victor Drozd are also here (but not the puzzles, because one of them is very controversial).
The game should be compatible with 48K ZX Spectrum machines and up. It's free, but please spread the word in exchange :)

This is a TAP file for old ZX Spectrum computer. So you need a real machine or emulator (e.g. Fuse which is free).

Hello!! Sorry for the intrusion, hehehe. My name is Felipe, and until recently, I have been editing games for the Spectrum on cassette. Due to personal and work reasons, I’m going to stop editing, and I'm saying goodbye with a compilation of homebrew games for The Spectrum on USB. I want it to be the best and most complete compilation of homebrew games that has ever been made. It will be a non-profit edition, just to provide users of The Spectrum with a pack to spend hours and hours in front of their ZX. I’ve seen some of your games on http://Itch.io and wanted to ask if you would be interested in contributing any of your ZX games to this compilation. I already have legendary creators from the scene on board, but I’d also like to reach out to you. It can be one game, two, or as many as you want, in .TAP format. Even simply granting me permission and letting me know which games I could include would be enough, and I can download them from http://Itch.io. We have created a system where the games will be encrypted, and no one will be able to use them digitally; they will only be playable on their The Spectrum, Divide, or computer. My email is playonretro@gmail.com. Best regards, and thank you very much
Very nice TETRIS with some well-know chip tunes (Jean-Michel Jarre, Rob Hubbard, etc.). Our German-language review can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 03:41:08. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂
Danke schön!
I saw a debugger in your video. Probably It's a bug. What emulator do you use? Any ideas what you did before it happened? I don't know German.
I can reassure you. 🙂 It wasn't a bug, but rather accidentally opening the debugger in "Speccy" with the "F1" key. I actually wanted to go back to the title screen and didn't know which key to use to do that.
Really good Tetris for the ZX Spectrum. I also included it in my new "Gameplay of New ZX Spectrum games from February 2025" video, along with other recently released games. Hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks a lot!
Good fun :)
Thanks!
I got to level 48, where there is a time limit, I have to destroy bricks and remove 2 2lines. Is it really possible to finish it?
What a progress! Wow! Yes, I checked every level in game. Please tell me first what sound mode (key 4 in menu) did you use to play?
I should check it once more.
Have you seen anything resembling Easter egg yet?
You probably will hate me and this game, but I told you that it's possible to finish level 48 (red fox) with 10 seconds remaining providing you are selecting 48K sound modes from menu.
Yes, it takes lots of attempts and luck. Perhaps too much. I should make it easier.
I had selected "128K MUSIC 50 FPS". With 48K sound is slower.
Brilliant game, here is my tribute !
Thank you so much for this review! It's the only long video with commentary and kempston joystick demonstration as far as I know.
Great work. There are many mediocre Tetris games for the 8-bit micros, but this one plays really well. I have 2 suggestions: a CPU opponent, and sending garbage lines to the other player.
Thanks!
CPU opponent was my dream for many years. It's theoretically possible, there are several known algorithms, but not an easy task to do with 8-bit assembler.
The amount of code for the CPU opponent can be compared to the game in current state.
The other factor is algorithm speed. It should be quite fast and clever enough in the same time.
Sending garbage lines was one of unimplemented features.
Thanks so much for making this! And yeah a simulated vs mode ... sorry to heap on the dream pile but :3 ... but anyway, I adore it as it is! <3
Nice game!
Thank you!
Great game, thanks.
Please select "128K music, 48K sounds" mode in menu if you need beeper sound effects
